Where to stay in Swellendam

A dog barks behind a garden wall, a gate clicks shut. Where you sleep in Swellendam mostly decides whether you walk to dinner or take the car.

Towards evening Voortrek Street goes quiet. A lorry hums past on the N2, then nothing. Above the roofs to the north the Clock Peaks, two summits of the Langeberg, stand as a dark edge against the sky.

Swellendam is small enough to cover on foot. The Dutch Reformed church, the Drostdy Museum, the Old Gaol and Mayville sit close together, and most restaurants are on Voortrek Street and Swellengrebel Street. Sleep in the old centre and the car stays parked in the evening. What is on the menu is on the page about restaurants in Swellendam.

The guesthouses line Voortrek Street, the main road, and the side streets around the Drostdy. To the north, Berg Street runs towards the Langeberg. Stay at its top end or at the western end of Voortrek Street and you get more garden and a view of the mountains, but a longer walk into the centre. And further out? On the farms near Buffeljagsrivier, on the R60 or in the mission village of Suurbraak it is quiet, and every dinner means a drive.

Each card gives a price for a single night, namely the exact night shown on the card. That is a snapshot, not a rate. Over the summer holidays between December and January the same room may cost something different. The number on the photo is the trivago guest average on a scale up to ten. Lang Elsie's Kraal in Bontebok National Park

The rest camp of Bontebok National Park sits on the bank of the Breede River, six kilometres from town according to SANParks, seven according to the German Wikipedia. It is named after Lang Elsie, a Khoekhoe leader of the 18th century. SANParks lets the chalets and pitches itself through its own reservations office, which is why they are missing from the list above.

In May 2026 the Breede burst its banks. Paths and viewing decks along the river were washed away and the camp closed for a while. Since 1 August 2026 the park has been reopening in phases. As of 1 September 2026 six chalets and the campsite were open again, with the remaining riverside chalets still under repair. The sources differ on the camp's full size: the SANParks accommodation page gives ten units, the 2026 notices six plus eight.

Check-in is at 2 pm and check-out at 9 am, according to SANParks. Ask SANParks about the state of the repairs before you book. What else the park offers is under around Swellendam.

The huts of the Swellendam Hiking Trail

Up in Marloth Nature Reserve above town stand the huts of the Swellendam Hiking Trail: Boskloof, Goedgeloof, Proteavallei and Wolfkloof. They are trail stops, not holiday homes. You can only sleep there as part of a booked trail group. CapeNature asks for at least three people, and the sources give the maximum as ten or eleven.

Each hut has mattresses, basic toilets and drinking water for twelve, and you bring your own cooking gear. Boskloof is just a shelter without beds, cold in winter and hot in summer. At the reserve office, where the trail starts and ends, CapeNature also lets Bushbuck Cottage and Suikerbekkie Cottage. Everything is booked through CapeNature, and the stages and requirements are on the activities page.

When to book early

South African school holidays set the rhythm. The last school term of 2026 ends on 11 December, and the new school year starts on 13 January 2027. In between lie the long summer holidays, with public holidays on 16, 25 and 26 December and 1 January.

In 2027 a break follows between 19 March and 6 April, with Good Friday on 26 March and Family Day on 29 March. The winter holidays fall between 25 June and 20 July. CapeNature treats all school and public holidays in the Western Cape, each including the day before and after, as high season. For the holidays from September 2027 the government school calendar and a summary of the gazette give different dates, so check them before you plan.

In Bontebok National Park the aftermath of the flood adds to that in 2026. As long as only six chalets are let, they go faster than usual.

What to look out for

Several restaurants in town open only in the evening, and some not every day. La Sosta on Voortrek Street takes guests by reservation only, and Field & Fork on Swellengrebel Street cooks only at night. Stay far out and you drive back after dinner in the dark, which the German Foreign Office advises against on country roads.

Our tipMarloth is not a long drive. According to CapeNature it is three kilometres from the four-way stop in town along Andrew White Street to the gate, then just under one and a half on gravel to the office. That matters, because CapeNature advises against setting off on the Swellendam Hiking Trail after 9 am.

Questions about staying overnight

Can you stay overnight in Bontebok National Park near Swellendam?

Yes, at Lang Elsie's Kraal, the rest camp on the Breede River that SANParks lets out itself. After the flood of May 2026, SANParks reported six chalets and the campsite open again as of 1 September 2026, with the riverside chalets still under repair. Ask SANParks which chalets are available before you book.

Can you sleep in the Swellendam Hiking Trail huts without walking the trail?

No. The huts in Marloth Nature Reserve near Swellendam are overnight stops on the multi-day Swellendam Hiking Trail, and CapeNature allocates them with a trail booking to groups of at least three. They have mattresses, basic toilets and drinking water, and you bring your own cooking gear.

When should you book accommodation in Swellendam early?

For South African school holidays and public holidays, above all from mid December to mid January and around Easter. CapeNature counts these periods, including the day before and after, as high season, and Bontebok National Park has fewer chalets to let than usual after the 2026 flood.

Where should you stay in Swellendam to walk to dinner?

In the old centre of Swellendam, between Voortrek Street, the Dutch Reformed church and the Drostdy Museum. From there you walk to the restaurants on Voortrek Street and Swellengrebel Street and leave the car parked.
