Above the rooftops the Clock Peaks lose the last of the light. Down on Voortrek Street the first lamps come on behind white gables, and a car circles for a parking spot. A dog barks behind a garden wall. Then nothing.
Swellendam is small, and so is the choice in the evening. Most places sit on Voortrek Street, the long main road, or on Swellengrebel Street near the Drostdy Museum. Several kitchens open only in the evening or only on certain days, so phone first. All opening days below are as of October 2026.
For dinner
La Sosta, Voortrek Street
Modern Italian cooking, served as a tasting menu, with three menus to choose from. In 2014 the restaurant magazine Eat Out named La Sosta its best Italian restaurant. You will need a reservation. The sources disagree on which evenings it opens: TripAdvisor lists only Wednesday and Thursday, while the travel blogger Roxanne Reid wrote in 2024 that it was open Tuesday to Saturday. Ask when you book.
Christelle's Bistro, 113A Voortrek Street
French and Mediterranean, with a menu that changes with the seasons. Vegan and vegetarian dishes are a fixed part of it. Food & Home magazine calls the bistro "100% pet-friendly", so the dog can come too. According to TripAdvisor, Christelle's serves dinner Monday to Saturday and is closed on Sundays.
Koornlands Restaurant, 192 Voortrek Street
A Victorian house with a red tin roof and the menu chalked on a board. The kitchen calls its style "Cuisine du Cap", which mostly means game: ostrich, kudu, springbok. Bitterballen are there for anyone with a taste for Dutch snacks.
Field & Fork, 26 Swellengrebel Street
Its full name is Field & Fork Country Kitchen, and it describes its food as "country-style", somewhere between bistro and fine dining. The restaurant is in a historic building by the Drostdy Museum. It opens in the evenings only.
Breakfast, lunch, coffee
La Belle Alliance, Swellengrebel Street
The building was once the Freemasons' lodge. Today it serves breakfast and lunch, and the terrace runs right along the Koornlands River. On a day in town, this is the place to break between museum and church, since the Old Gaol, part of the Drostdy Museum, stands on the same street. La Belle Alliance is closed in the evening.
Tredici, on the N2
Deli, bakery and restaurant in one, with European and Italian cooking and a shop for fine food and kitchenware. You can see it from the N2, which makes it an easy stop if you are only passing through. According to TripAdvisor, Tredici opens daily from early morning to early evening.
Pizza and deli
Woodpecker Pizzadeli, 270 Voortrek Street
Pizza and Italian dishes, plus a deli. Children get their own menu, and African antiques hang on the walls. Woodpecker opens at lunchtime and stays open into the evening, except on Sundays, when it closes in the afternoon.
Country Deli, 22 Swellengrebel Street
Right next to Field & Fork: a deli and bakery, with pizza from lunchtime. A florist is part of the business. According to TripAdvisor Country Deli opens on weekdays only, so look elsewhere at the weekend.
Saturday market
A market called Under the Oaks runs on Saturday mornings. Whether that means every Saturday or once a month, the sources do not agree. The guest house Schoone Oordt mentions a new one, the Wagenweg Boutique Market. Ask at your guest house for the next date.
Our tipPick two places for the evening and phone in the afternoon. Set off after sunset without a plan and you can easily end up at a door in Swellendam where nobody is cooking tonight.
